ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence: Why Not to Fear It?

Recently, many tools are being mentioned, such as ChatGPT (which has been widely discussed lately), or perhaps you’ve encountered another bot on a website, and at first, you think you’re talking to another person to solve your problem or complaint. Both cases are examples of Artificial Intelligence. But what is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is a discipline within computer science that aims to replicate and even develop intelligence and all the processes it entails through computers. There is currently no consensus on the exact definition, but there are four approaches regarding it:

  • - Two focused on humans (systems that think like humans and systems that act like humans).
  • - Two focused on rationality (systems that think rationally and systems that act rationally).

Much can be said about this concept, and perhaps people with more imagination immediately start to think of movies and sagas like Terminator, Matrix or characters like Ultrón in Marvel, even feeling fear that such things could happen in reality. Personally, I feel we are still far from that, and technology would have to evolve significantly for it to become self-aware and bypass the three laws of robotics that writer Isaac Asimov outlined in his 1942 story "Runaround":

  • - First law: “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.”
  • - Second law: “A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.”
  • - Third law: “A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.”

Having said all this, and putting aside fears, what benefits can we gain from Artificial Intelligence? There are various applications of the concept, such as: data mining (which we can discuss later), industry, medicine, virtual worlds, natural language processing, robotics, video games, etc.

Indeed, natural language processing is what has enabled the implementation of multiple bots that assist and guide users on various websites and information systems as if a help desk member were attending to them. The concept has developed so much that we have tools like the aforementioned ChatGPT (created by OpenAI) at our disposal, which can engage in conversation with a human, based on text and providing advanced responses. According to experts, it is the best imitation of humans by artificial intelligence to date (remember that this is a key success factor for any AI).

Why has it been so frequently mentioned lately? Because of its versatility. So much so that a giant like Google has activated its "red code" to confront this new rival and ensure that its browser, Google Chrome, is not displaced by this new AI.

As you can see, we can make great use of Artificial Intelligence, more than people might imagine.
